It is one of the major buffering systems used to maintain the pH of mammalian blood and is also important in the acid-base homeostasis of living things, including humans. It tends to maintain a relatively constant plasma pH and counteract any force that would alter it. It is used to neutralize the pH of the chyme leaving the stomach and entering the small intestine.
