Bismuth(III) chloride is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis and to prepare other bismuth salts. It is used as a starting material for the preparation of bismuthoxychloride upon hydrolysis. It is an oxidizing agent to prepare metallic bismuth by reducing agent. Further, it catalyzes the Michael reaction and the Mukaiyama-aldol reaction. In addition to this, it is a Lewis acid.

Aplicaciones
El cloruro de bismuto(III) se utiliza como catalizador en la síntesis orgánica y para preparar otras sales de bismuto. Se utiliza como material de partida para la preparación de bismutoxicloruro en la hidrólisis. Es un agente oxidante para preparar bismuto metálico mediante agente reductor. Además, cataliza la reacción de Michael y la reacción aldólica de Mukaiyama. También es un ácido de Lewis.

Solubilidad
Soluble en ácido clorhídrico, ácido nítrico, éter dietílico, acetato de etilo y acetona. Insoluble en alcohol.

Notas
Higroscópico. Incompatible con agentes oxidantes fuertes.
