N-acylsphingosine amidohydrolase-like 1 (ASAHL), commonly referred to as acid ceramidase-like protein, is a gene located on human chromosome 22q13.31. ASAHL encodes a protein that functions as a ceramidase, responsible for hydrolyzing ceramide into sphingosine and fatty acid, which are pivotal for cell signaling pathways that regulate cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. Though similar to acid ceramidase, ASAHL's specific biological role and tissue distribution remain active research areas, suggesting potential involvement in lipid metabolism and cellular homeostasis. Dysregulation of ceramidase activity, including ASAHL, is linked to various diseases, such as cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic syndromes, due to the crucial role of sphingolipid signaling in these conditions.
