Benzhydryl bromide is a halogenated building block. Benzhydryl group was preferred to the commoner benzyl to protect 2-nitrophenol in the Bartoli (vinyl Grignard) synthesis of 7-hydroxyindole. Protection was by reaction with the phenol in the presence of potassium carbonate in acetone; deprotection of the indole was by hydrogenolysis.

Aplicaciones
El bromuro de bencilo es un compuesto básico halogenado. El grupo bencidrilo se prefirió al grupo bencilo, más común, para proteger el 2-nitrofenol durante la síntesis de Bartoli (Grignard de vinilo) del 7-hidroxiindol. Se consiguió proteger cuando reaccionó con el fenol en presencia del carbonato de potasio en acetona, mientras que para desproteger del indol se empleó una hidrogenólisis.
