Trimethylsulfoxonium iodide reacts with sodium hydride to prepare dimethyloxosulfonium methylide, which is used as a methylene-transfer reagent in synthetic chemistry. It is used to prepare ylide, which reacts with carbonyl compounds to get epoxides. Further, it reacts with alfa,beta-unsaturated esters to get cyclopropyl esters.

Aplicaciones
El yoduro de trimetilsulfoxonio reacciona con el hidruro de sodio para preparar metiluro de dimetiloxosulfonio, que se utiliza como reactivo de transferencia de metileno en química sintética. Se utiliza para preparar iluro, que reacciona con los compuestos de carbonilo para obtener epóxidos. Además, reacciona con los ésteres alfa y beta-insaturados para obtener ésteres de ciclopropilo.
