Trimethylamine N-oxide dihydrate is used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. It is also used to make quaternary ammonium compounds and a warning agent for flammable gas. Further, it acts as a flavoring agent or adjuvant. It serves as an oxidant for the catalytic osmium tetraoxide cis-hydroxylation of hindered olefins. In addition to this, it is used as a reactant for C-H bond cleavage and decarbonylating agent for solvent-free reactions.

El N-óxido de trimetilamina dihidrato se utiliza como agente oxidante en la síntesis orgánica. También se utiliza para fabricar compuestos de amonio cuaternario y como agente de advertencia para el gas inflamable. Además, actúa como un agente aromatizante o adyuvante. Sirve como oxidante para cis-hidroxilación de olefinas obstaculizadas con tetraóxido de osmio catalítico. Además, se utiliza como reactante para la escisión de enlace C-H y como agente descarbonilante para reacciones sin disolventes.
Solubilidad
Soluble en agua, etanol, dimetilsulfóxido y metanol. Escasamente soluble en cloroformo caliente. Insoluble en éter dietílico, benceno y disolventes de hidrocarburos.
Notas
Higroscópico. Incompatible con ácidos, cloruros de ácidos, anhídridos de ácidos y agentes oxidantes.
