Trimethyl borate is a useful reagent in organic synthesis. It is involved in the production of resins, waxes and paints and acts as a methylation agent. As a boron source, it is used to prepare flame retardants, anti-oxidants and corrosion inhibitors. It reacts with Grignard reagents followed by hydrolysis to prepare boronic acid. It is also used as a precursor of borate esters, which finds application in Suzuki coupling reaction. It is an intermediate in the preparation of sodium borohydride.

Aplicaciones
El borato de trimetilo es un reactivo útil en la síntesis orgánica. Participa en la producción de resinas, ceras y pinturas, y actúa como agente de metilación. Como fuente de boro, se utiliza para preparar retardantes de llama, antioxidantes e inhibidores de corrosión. Reacciona con reactivos de Grignard tras hidrólisis para preparar el ácido borónico. También se utiliza como precursor de los ésteres de borato, que se usan en la reacción de Suzuki de acoplamiento. Actúa como intermediario en la preparación del borohidruro de sodio.

Solubilidad
Miscible con tetrahidrofurano, éter, isoporpilamina, hexano y metanol.

Notas
Sensible a la humedad. Mantenga el recipiente bien cerrado en un lugar seco y bien ventilado. Incompatible con agentes oxidantes. Se descompone lentamente en presencia de humedad y rápidamente en el agua.
