A compound used to convert alkyl halides into the corresponding alkylthiocyanates. Undergoes nucleophilic substitution reactions with phase-transfer catalysts. Silver thiocyanate may be used as well, the precipitation of insoluble silver halides help simplify workup. Treatment of isopropyl bromide with sodium thiocyanate in a hot ethanolic solution affords isopropyl thiocyanate.

Aplicaciones
Compuesto utilizado para convertir los haluros de alquilo en los alquiltiocianatos correspondientes. Sufre reacciones de sustitución nucleofílica con los catalizadores de transferencia de fase. El tiocianato de plata también puede usarse; la precipitación de haluros de plata insolubles ayuda a simplificar el trabajo. El tratamiento del bromuro de isopropilo con tiocianato de sodio en una solución etanólica caliente ofrece tiocianato de isopropilo.

Soluble en agua (1250 g/l), alcohol y acetona.
