Potassium iodate is an oxidizing agent used to prepare 2-styrylchromones from o-hydroxy-ω-cinnamylideneacetophenones by oxidative cyclization. It is used to iodinate table salt in order to prevent iodine deficiency. It is an active ingredient in baby formula milk. As a maturing agent, it is used in baking. Furthermore, it is involved in the protection of radioactive iodine accumulation in the thyroid.

Aplicaciones
El yodato de potasio es un agente oxidante utilizado para preparar 2-estirilcromonas a partir de o-hidroxi-ω-cinamilidenoacetofenonas por ciclización oxidativa. Se utiliza para yodar la sal de mesa con el fin de prevenir la deficiencia de yodo. Es un ingrediente activo en la leche de fórmula para bebés. Como agente de maduración, se utiliza para la panificación. Además, participa en la protección de la acumulación de yodo radiactivo en la tiroides.

Solubilidad
Soluble en agua, solución de yoduro de potasio. Insoluble en alcohol, amoníaco líquido y ácido nítrico.

Notas
Incompatible con aluminio, agentes oxidantes fuertes, sulfuros, peróxidos, metales y agentes reductores. Evitar el calor, los golpes y la fricción.
