Mercury(II) oxide is used in marine and porcelain paints, dry batteries, chemical reagents, and topical antiseptics. It acts as a significant part in the production of mercury. It is utilitarian in the deduction of a mercury based superconductor. It is likewise employed, as a photo-oxidant for the photochemical oxidation of primary aromatic amines to the corresponding azoaromatic compounds. It is also an essential material for the preparation of cathodes in mercury batteries.

Aplicaciones
El óxido de mercurio(II) se utiliza en pinturas marinas y de porcelana, pilas secas, reactivos químicos y antisépticos tópicos. Desrmpeña un papel importante en la producción de mercurio. Es funcional en la deducción de un superconductor basado en mercurio. También se emplea, como fotooxidante para la oxidación fotoquímica de las aminas aromáticas primarias a los compuestos azoaromáticos correspondientes. También es un material esencial para la preparación de cátodos en pilas de mercurio.

Solubilidad
Parcialmente soluble en agua. Insoluble en alcohol, éter, acetona y amoníaco.

Notas
Sensible a la luz. Incompatible con ácido hipofosfórico, combustibles, agentes oxidantes fuertes, agentes reductores fuertes, materiales combustibles, materiales orgánicos y fenoles.
