It is used in the production of dry cell batteries. It is a precursor material for antiknock compound methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbony. It is also useful for coupling reactions as well as organic synthesis. It is a catalyst for fast and slow dehydrogenation of ball milled lithium alanate.
