Glyoxal is used to prepare 4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone by condensation with urea. It finds application in leather tanning process, textile finishes and paper coatings. It is an important building block in the synthesis of imidazoles. It acts as a solubilizer and cross-linking agent in polymer chemistry. Further, it is used as a fixative for histology to preserve cells in order to examine under a microscope.

Aplicaciones
el glioxal se usa para preparar 4,5-dihidroxi-2-imidazolidinona por condensación con urea. Se aplica en el proceso de curtido de cuero, acabados textiles y revestimientos de papel. Es un elemento importante en la síntesis de imidazoles. Actúa como solubilizante y agente de entrecruzamiento en la química de polímeros. Además, se utiliza como fijador para la histología con el fin de preservar las células y de examinarlas bajo el microscopio.
