La formamida se utiliza para la crioconservación de tejidos y órganos y en tampones de hibridación. Actúa como un estabilizador de ARN en electroforesis en gel por ARN desionizante. Se utiliza como disolvente alternativo para el autoensamblaje electrostático de nanofilas poliméricas. Se utiliza en la preparación de secciones cerebrales de ratones para inmunohistoquímica BrdU y análisis Fish de células HeLa. Desempeña fundamentalmente un papel vital en la cristalización de los productos farmacéuticos, en la estabilización del suelo, como disolvente en tintas, como componente de fertilizantes líquidos, como revestimiento resistente al calor y en algunos productos de cuidado personal.
