Se aplica en síntesis orgánica, como catalizador y reactivo. Se utiliza como catalizador en la reacción de Sandmeyer para preparar los bromuros de arilo de las arilaminas a través de las sales de diazonio. Forma complejos con bases de Lewis, como dimetilsulfuro, que es un precursor de los reactivos de organocobre. Las reacciones que implican polimerización radical de transferencia de átomos (ATRP) y acoplamientos deshidrogenativos cruzados catalizados por Cu (CDC) se catalizan mediante complejos de CuBr.
