El cloruro de benzalconio es un agente activo de superficie catiónica. Se utiliza como conservante en productos farmacéuticos, como gotas oculares, auriculares y nasales. Se emplea en productos de cuidado personal, como toallitas húmedas, champús, desinfectantes para manos, desodorantes y cosméticos. Se utiliza ampliamente en la industria química como precipitante y emulsionante/desemulsionante. Actúa como inhibidor de la corrosión en el oleoducto de la industria del gas y del petróleo para evitar la formación de gases sulfurosos.
