4-Chloroanisole was found to react with Cu (II)-smectite forming a blue clay-organic complex. 4-Chloroanisole was chosen as the main test substrate for the optimisation studies as it is electronically deactivated and thus resistant to oxidative addition and consequently very reluctant to enter a catalytic manifold.

Aplicaciones
Se descubrió que el 4-cloroanisol reaccionaba con la esmectita-Cu(II) y formaba un complejo orgánico de arcilla azul. Se eligió el 4-cloroanisol como el principal sustrato de prueba para los estudios de optimización, ya que está desactivado electrónicamente, por lo que es resistente a la adición oxidativa y, en consecuencia, muy reacio a entrar en un colector catalítico.
