3-Hydroxybutyric acid is used in enantioselective synthesis of D-(-)-3-hydroxybutyric acid by escherichia coli. It forms films of random copolymer with (R)-3-hydroxypentanoic acid, (R)-3-hydroxyhexanoic acid, 4-hydroxybutyric acid, 6-hydroxyhexanoic acid and (S,S)-lactide by the melt-crystallized method.

Aplicaciones
El ácido 3-hidroxibutírico se utiliza en la síntesis enantioselectiva del ácido D-(-)-3-hidroxibutírico por Escherichia coli. Si se utiliza el método de cristalización por fusión, forma películas de copolímero aleatorio con ácido (R)-3-hidroxipentanoico, ácido (R)-3-hidroxihexanoico, ácido 4-hidroxibutirico, ácido 6-hidroxihexanoico y (S,S)-lactida.
