1,4-Dithio-DL-threitol is used as a protective agent for preventing oxidation of thiol groups and reagent for the reduction of disulfide groups in proteins. It is employed to investigate a-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase function, flavin cofactors in proteins and protein moieties involved in peroxide reduction. It is also useful for stabilizing sulfhydryl-containing enzymes.

Aplicaciones
El 1,4-Ditiho-DL-treitol se utiliza como agente protector para prevenir la oxidación de los grupos de tiol y como reactivo para la reducción de los grupos de disulfuro en las proteínas. Se emplea para investigar la función deshidrogenasa del a-cetoglutarato, los cofactores de la flavina en proteínas y los restos de proteínas implicados en la reducción del peróxido. También es útil para estabilizar las enzimas que contienen sulfhidrilo.

Solubilidad
Soluble en agua, etanol, cloroformo, éter dietílico, acetona, éter y acetato de etilo.

Notas
Sensible al aire y al calor. Higroscópico. Incompatible con los agentes oxidantes fuertes, los agentes reductores y los alcalinos.
