1,3-Dithiane is used in umpolung reactions such as the Corey-Seebach reaction. It acts as a reagent for the deoxygenation of sulfoxides to their corresponding sulfides. Further, it is used as a protecting group for carbonyl compounds used in organic synthesis. It serves as a useful labeled synthon. In addition to this, it is used in the preparation of 2-ethyl-[1,3]dithiane.

Aplicaciones
El 1,3-ditiano se utiliza en reacciones de inversión de la polaridad como la reacción de Corey-Seebach. Actúa como reactivo para la desoxigenación de los sulfóxido a sus correspondientes sulfuros. Asimismo, se usa como un grupo de protección en los compuestos carbonilo de la síntesis orgánica. Sirve como un sintón etiquetado útil. Además de esto, se utiliza en la preparación de 2-etil-[1,3]ditiano.

Soluble en benceno, éter, cloroformo y terahidrofurano. Ligeramente soluble en agua.
