1,10-Phenanthroline monohydrate is useful to study the DNA-protein interactions due to its nuclease activity. It is used as a redox indicator and reagent for spectrophotometric assay of silver. It acts as a chelating ligand for the determination of Fe, Pd and V. It also acts as a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor. It is a photometric reagent for iron, which forms a red chelate with ferrous (iron II) ion.

El 1,10-fenantrolina monohidrato es útil para estudiar las interacciones entre ADN y proteínas debido a su actividad nucleasa. Se utiliza como indicador de redox y reactivo en el ensayo de espectrofotometría de plata. Actúa como ligando quelante en la determinación de Fe, Pd y V. También actúa como inhibidor de la metaloproteinasa de matriz. Es un reactivo fotométrico para el hierro, que forma un quelante rojo con ion ferroso (hierro II).
Solubilidad
Soluble en etanol, acetona y metanol. Ligeramente soluble en agua y benceno.
Notas
Las soluciones de trabajo de 1,10-fenantrolina monohidrato pueden mantenerse estables durante unos días a temperaturas refrigeradas. Incompatible con agentes oxidantes fuertes y ácidos fuertes.
