tert-Butyl alcohol is used as a solvent and ethanol denaturant. It is an active ingredient of paint remover. It acts as an intermediate in the production of methyl tertiary butyl ether and ethyl tertiary butyl ether by reaction with methanol and ethanol. It is also used in the preparation of tert-butyl chloride, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, isobutylene and methyl methacrylate. It serves as a fuel additive as well as a gasoline octane booster.

El alcohol de terc-butilo se utiliza como disolvente y desnaturalizante de etanol. Es un ingrediente activo del quita pinturas. Actúa como intermedio en la producción de éter de butilo terciario de metilo y éter de butilo terciario de etilo mediante reacción con metanol y etanol. También se utiliza en la preparación de cloruro de terc-butilo, hidroperóxido de terc-butilo, isobutileno y metacrilato de metilo. Sirve como aditivo de combustible, así como reforzador de octanaje de gasolina.
Solubilidad
Miscible con agua, etanol, éter etílico y cloroformo.
Notas
Incompatible con agentes oxidantes fuertes, cobre, metales alcalinos y aluminio.
